There is much interest in Shadrach McCLENDON since he was an Revolutionary War Soldier and since he made his way across the Southern states from Virginia and finally settled in Catahoula Parish, LA. (NOTE: Parts of Catahoula Parish later formed LaSalle Parish.)

McLendon (McClendon), Lewis, Drummer, 2nd SC Line
Soldier was born in c1757 in Old Duplin and was the son of Lewis and
Mary Mclendon and younger brother to Shadrack McLendon who also served
in the same unit.

McLendon (McClendon), Shadrack, Private, 2nd SC Line S36695
Soldier was born in 1752 and was the son of Lewis and Mary McLendon,
and brother to Lewis McLendon who also served. Soldier was born in old
Duplin, relocated from Sampson County to New Hanover, and Pender.

Soldier was recruited by SC as a Revolutionary War Soldier in January
of 1780. Soldier enlisted for three years and was in the siege of
Savannah Ga. from 23rd September to 19th October, 1779 in which he lost
his left eye. Soldier was at the surrender of Charleston SC on 12th May,
1780 where he was taken prisoner by the British. He was held 14 months,
he escaped in July 1781, and was discharged after serving two years and
six months.

Soldier applied 18 Sept. 1827 for pension in Copiah Co. MS and on 19
Sept 1827. A son, Lewis McLendon made affidavit in that county. Soldier
was still living at age 88 in Copiah Co. in 1840. Soldier made
affidavit on 12 Nov. 1845 in Catahoula Parish LA. Soldier died about
1855. Submitted by Fred Hintz.

Glen Lee Greene's HOUSE UPON A ROCK: ABOUT SOUTHERN BAPTISTS IN LOUISIANA
(Shreveport: Executive Board of the Louisana Baptist Convention, 1973) on
pages 61-71 gives a brief history of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church which
includes (p 62):

State of Louisiana
Parish of St. Tammany
We the Baptist Church of Christ called Mount Nebo on Big Creek, holding the
doctrines of Election, effective calling etc. which Church was constituted on
the 31 Jan. 1813 by reverends Ezra Courtney and Howel Wall comprising members
5 Males & one Female, whos names are annexed together with those who have
since joined.

Greene states (p 62): Forty-five names appear on the following list of charter
members:

These names were taken from the Mount Nebo Baptist Church (Tangipahoa Parish)
Minute Book (1813-1903), page 1. The Louisiana Baptist Historical Commission
at the Louisiana Baptist Executive Committee in Alexandria has a microfilm
copy of these minutes.

Of those listed above, William Hogan, his wife Narcissa Hogan, and his mother
Tabitha Hogan are my ancestors. I believe Susanna Robertson, wife of Matthew
Robertson to be William Hogan's sister. Tabitha Robertson was the daughter of
Matthew Robertson and Susanna Hogan; she later married Peter Bankston. The
Sarah Saunders MAY be Sarah MIXON Sanders, wife of Cullen Sanders whose son
(born ca1813) is said to have married Nancy Hogan, daughter of William. Like
many of the others listed here, William Hogan came from GA, having been
married there in Washington Co.

Thomas Judge was the son of Hilliard Judge, and Hilliard's second wife, Martha McClendon. Hilliard was a veteran of the Civil War, having fought with Company C., 37th Mississippi Infantry Regiment throughout the war. He was captured, released on probation, returned home, rejoined his unit and was captured again towards the end of the war.

Thomas Judge's mother, Martha McClendon, was the daughter of Lewis McClendon (b.1804), and Susannah Sides (married in Copiah County, Mississippi on 16 May 1826). Lewis was the third son of Shadrach McClendon (1751-1855), a Revolutionary War veteran, who served under Col. Robert Anderson's Regiment, 13th Continental Line, South Carolina, also the same regiment as his father, Lewis McClendon (1728/30-1778). Shadrach made application in 1826 for pension from Copiah County, Mississippi where he was living. In his pension, Shadrach stated he was in the siege of Savannah where he lost his left eye. He was captured by the British and held prisoner for fourteen months, then escaped. For more information on the McClendon family, read The McClendon Family, published 1983; by Melba Goff Allen of Pascagoula, Mississippi. She traces the McClendon family back to Dennis MacLennan of Scotland who migrated with two other brothers, John and William McLennan, to Perquimans County, North Carolina in January 1696.

Happy New Year's Patty!
Last night while raffling through all my McClendon notes I came across some
information that shocked me. I had filed it, thinking it ended my search for
a link with Shadrack McClendon's son Jesse. The email listed Shadrack's son
William having died in Texas. Among his children were sons named William and
Franklin. Do you know anything about this? The email said the first
William's children were born between 1835 and about 1850. I'm going to reply
to the original sender and see if I can find out anything else. It was just
too wild, to think I've had that copy in my folder for several years. I'll
get back in touch.

I don't know how accurate this is, but Dan Lott (one of our distant cousins) said Joe's father's name was Jesse and was from Louisiana. I have found information in the DAR books and in Revolutionary War Pensioner's records that Shadrack McClendon (soldier) and son Jesse was living in Mississippi in 1840 but had moved to Louisiana by 1855. I don't think the dates would work out for Shadrack to be Joe's grandfather. He may be Joe's great grandfather and there might be two Jesses. I'm still running this rabbit! Shadrack's other children were Lewis, Sallie, Deborah and William. Shadrack was born in South Carolina to Lewis (also Rev. Soldier) and Nancy Belle --?

Hi: My name is Maxine Hetzel. I am not new to genealogy but I am new to e mail correspondence. I happened on your information and saw mention of Shadrack and Jesse McClendon of Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. Shadrack was my g g g grandfather. His son, Lewis, was my g g grandfather. Jesse was living with Lewis at the time of his death. I have a copy of the succession which is recorded in Harrisonburg, Louisiana. Lewis was the administrator of the succession and most of their holdings were a joint ownership. He left no heirs and his estate was to be divided 5 ways - Lewis, his only brother, 3 living sisters and to the children of one sister who was dead. I discovered your web sit a few days ago & have really enjoyed it. I'm trying to find any information I can on the McClendon name in South Carolina. Below is data from my files from family information and personal visits to the two cem mentioned. I know of a Daniel McClendon in the early 1800's in SC but do not know his relationship with my people. If any of you have a GEDCOM or FTM file on the early McClendons I sure would appreciate a copy.

My 3ed Great-grandfather ( I think! Due to the fact that I have found several Joel McClendon graves in the area) was Joe McClendon. He probably lived in Edgefield SC in Dist 96. He married Sarah who was born in 1812.

You really put in some time on the family tree. I'm totally impressed. I do have an update, however. I've come to the conclusion Shadrack is not our ancestor, but most likely a brother to our ancestor. Last fall while snatching a few moments at the library, I came across the 1860 census report from Washington Parish, LA with a listing for William McLendon, age 38 from South Carolina, wife Mary, age 31 from Louisiana with children John age 8, Ginena (handwriting difficult to decipher) age 7 female and <<***TA-DA***>> JOSEPH age 3. Now, I believe this is our Joseph. He's the right age and in the right location but that would blow our info from Dan Lott that Joseph's father was Jesse.

Of course the census taker used only one "C" but, hey, that's a familiar story with our name. I still haven't had time to research it completely and I couldn't find the family in the next census but, if the story that Joseph's father died when he was only 6, then Joseph may be listed under another household. What do you think?

Shadrack did have a son named William (as well as one named Jesse) but they would have been a lot older than 38 in 1860. I wanted to sort all this out before I tried to explain it, but alas and alack, I haven't. I want to locate Joseph in the 1870 census, when he was 13. His mother may have remarried or they may have lived with her parents or near her parents. Or maybe they lived with William's father who could have been Jesse. (thus explaining why Dan Lott came up with the name Jesse as Joseph's father). Anyway, I will try to find some time to work on this so we can be sure our info is accurate. -- snip --

Just an update on our elusive ancestor Joseph. Maxine sent the following info. The dates on her William and Mary and Joseph still aren't matching up with the 1860 Louisiana Census or with Joseph's tombstone---SOOOOO--I've got to go back to the library and search some more. I think I'll try to locate Mary and the children under another name. (maybe she remarried after William died, or lived with some of her family) Also, I need to check the death records for both William & Mary.

Also, since Joseph was married to Laura Perry after our ggrandmother, I'm going to try to find their marriage license in hopes of finding his parents' names. The census record I located on three-year-old Joseph might not even be our Joseph, but it is the most concrete document I've come up with so far.

I'll keep you both posted on what is going on but as of now, it looks pretty definite that Shadrack is not in our lineage, maybe a relative, but not our direct ancestor.

I have reviewed my records and turned up the following info on Jesse. Jesse was married to Harriet Bennet on Oct. 12, 1813 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.
He was married to Esther Cotton on April 15, 1819 in Claiborn Co., Miss. Jesse was living with Lewis at the time of his death and a lot of their property was jointly owned. Documents regarding the succession are dated in 1856 which would put his death 7 years prior to the 1863 date. The documents are hard to read but I quote from one that he left "no heirs either in the ascending or descending line and that his succession falls to collateral kindred to wit" his only brother, Lewis and to 4 sisters, one of which was dead but that her children were to get her share of the estate. It further states that Lewis was the only heir living in Louisiana.
Esther was still living when Jesse died because she brought suit against Lewis who was appointed administrator of the estate.

There are so many Jesses in the McClendon family that it is hard to keep them separated. In my notes I have one listed in the 1820 census of Pike Co., Miss. with 6 children. He would have been 36 years old at the time. He was 29 when he married Harriet and 35 when he married Esther. He and Harriet could have had a child a year for 6 years and certainly he would have needed a mother for the children if Harriet had died. I am just thinking of possibilities if the death date of 1863 is incorrect.

Shadrack did have a son, William, b 1813, d 1850, m 1834 to Mina Franklin. They lived near Jackson, Miss. but later moved to Texas. They had a son, Livingston. I have no record of other children.

I have a record on a William M McClendon, b 1809, m to Mary Ann Pederson in 1832 and d 1868. He was from S.C. and was in Wayne Co., Miss. at the time of his death. They had 8 children - John, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, William II, Rebecca, Edward and Joseph, b 1850.

A miscellaneous note that I have dated 1858 in Catahoula Parish is regarding death of Armisted L. McLendon. John McClendon of that parish stated that Armisted was his nephew and a William McClendon was administrator of the succession.

I did not follow up on many of these notes because I determined at the time that I was doing the research that they were not my direct line. I have never lived in Catahoula Parish but many of my lines were there early on. I do plan to go back to Harrisonburg which is the parish seat to do further research and I shall certainly keep your Jesse, William and Joseph in mind.

I don't know how accurate this is, but Dan Lott (one of our distant cousins) said Joe's father's name was Jesse and was from Louisiana. I have found information in the DAR books and in Revolutionary War Pensioner's records that Shadrack McClendon (soldier) and son Jesse was living in Mississippi in 1840 but had moved to Louisiana by 1855. I don't think the dates would work out for Shadrack to be Joe's grandfather. He may be Joe's great grandfather and there might be two Jesses. I'm still running this rabbit! Shadrack's other children were Lewis, Sallie, Deborah and William. Shadrack was born in South Carolina to Lewis (also Rev. Soldier) and Nancy Belle --?

We are searching for information on Jesse B. McClendon and his ancestors. He married Margaret Rebecca Hutchinson from Greensburg, St. Helena Parrish, Louisiana. They lived in Greensburg and had six children; Fannie, Estelle, Ella, Florence, Herman Perry, and W. H. He owned a grocery store, a livery stable, and was a schoool teacher. He was killed by one of his fourteen year-old students. It's possible that he was the son of Shadrack McClendon.
